Isaiah Berlin
Isaiah Berlin wrote a book called, "Two Concepts of Liberty". In this book he talked about two types of liberties, negative liberty and positive liberty. Negative liberty is the absence of obstacles or restraints. Positive liberty is when you act upon your own free will. An example of negative and positive liberty being hindered, is slavery. With slavery and being enslaved you have obstacles and restraints on your life and you are not allowed to act on your free will. Both of these liberties are necessary in any free and civilized society.

Orlando Patterson
Like Isaiah Berlin, Orlando Patterson also wrote a book detailing different types of freedoms and liberties. Patterson's book was called, "Freedom in the Making of Western Culture". In this book Patterson has three elements of freedom and how they are an integral part of western civilization and how the experience of enforced servitude led people to value and institutionalize freedom. He also talks about how these freedoms are longed-for and fought-for necessity, rather than a historically adventitious luxury. These three types of freedoms are personal freedom, sovereignal freedom, and civic freedom. Personal freedom is the ability to pursue dreams without restraint, either by the state or by other individuals. Sovereignal freedom is the ability to behave as you please regardless of the rights of others. Finally, civic freedom comes from belonging to a community and enjoying the privileges of membership.
