How was freedom differently envisioned in the constitutions of L’Ouverture and Dessalines following the Haitian Revolution? In order to answer this question, we will examine the constitutions of L’Ouverture and Dessalines and compare and contrast them to one another. We will also include a brief overview of the Code Noir to show how freedoms had changed for Haitians after the revolt and background of the men to understand how their lives shaped their ideas of freedom. After recounting the events of the Haitian Revolution, we will quickly discuss how the freedoms of Haitians had changed and the different interpretations of those freedoms held in the infancy of the new nation. While pulling some discussion from Isaiah Berlin’s ideas of positive and negative liberty, we will predominantly focus our discussion of freedoms on Orlando Patterson’s ideas of personal, sovereignal, and civic freedom. For those who may like or need it, there are narrated videos of the sections, with closed captions available in full-screen mode.
